What is 20kg Concrete Bag Calculator?

The 20 kg concrete bag calculator converts project volume into the number of metric-sized pre-mixed concrete bags needed. In countries using the metric system (UK, Europe, Australia, and most of the world), concrete bags are sold in kilogram sizes — most commonly 20 kg, 25 kg, and 40 kg.

Standard metric bag yields:

  • 20 kg bag: Yields approximately 0.009 m³ (0.32 ft³) of mixed concrete
  • 25 kg bag: Yields approximately 0.011 m³ (0.40 ft³) of mixed concrete
  • 40 kg bag: Yields approximately 0.018 m³ (0.64 ft³) of mixed concrete

Concrete has a mixed density of approximately 2,200–2,400 kg/m³. A 20 kg bag contains the dry ingredients which, when mixed with water, produce about 0.009 cubic meters of wet concrete. The 20 kg size is the most popular for small DIY projects because it is easy to carry and mix by hand.

Formula

20kg Concrete Bag Calculator Formula

Number of bags = Total volume (m³) ÷ Yield per bag (m³)

Bag SizeYield per Bag (m³)Bags per m³
20 kg bag0.009 m³~108 bags
25 kg bag0.011 m³~88 bags
40 kg bag0.018 m³~55 bags

Example for 0.5 cubic meters:

  1. 20 kg bags: 0.5 ÷ 0.009 = 56 bags
  2. 25 kg bags: 0.5 ÷ 0.011 = 46 bags
  3. 40 kg bags: 0.5 ÷ 0.018 = 28 bags

Add 5–10% extra for waste and spillage.

Examples

Worked Examples

1 Cubic Meter

Needs 108 bags of 20 kg, 88 bags of 25 kg, or 55 bags of 40 kg. Total dry weight: ~2,160 kg (20 kg bags).

0.25 m³ (Small Slab)

Needs 28 bags of 20 kg, 23 bags of 25 kg, or 14 bags of 40 kg. Suitable for a 1.5 × 1.5 m slab at 10 cm thick.

0.1 m³ (Post Holes)

Needs 12 bags of 20 kg, 10 bags of 25 kg, or 6 bags of 40 kg. Enough for 4–6 fence post holes.

2 Cubic Meters (Driveway)

Needs 216 bags of 20 kg — at this volume, ready-mix delivery is strongly recommended.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the 20kg concrete bag calculator.

Approximately 108 bags of 20 kg concrete per cubic meter. This is based on a yield of 0.009 m³ per 20 kg bag (mixed density ~2,200 kg/m³). Actual yield may vary slightly by brand and mix design.

One 20 kg bag covers approximately 0.009 m³ when mixed. For a slab 50 mm (5 cm) thick, one bag covers about 0.18 m² (roughly 43 cm × 43 cm). For a 100 mm (10 cm) slab, one bag covers about 0.09 m².

Add approximately 2.5–3 liters of water per 20 kg bag. Start with 2.5 liters and add more gradually until the mix is workable but not runny. The ideal water-to-cement ratio is about 0.45–0.50. Too much water weakens the concrete significantly.

Close but not identical. 20 kg = 44.09 lbs. A US 40 lb bag = 18.14 kg. A 20 kg bag yields slightly more concrete than a 40 lb bag. Both are in the "light, easy-to-carry" category designed for one-person lifting.

Switch to ready-mix for projects over 0.5 m³ (approximately 56 bags of 20 kg). Ready-mix delivery saves enormous time and labor. Mixing 56+ bags by hand takes several hours, while ready-mix arrives pre-mixed and pours in minutes. The per-unit cost of ready-mix is also significantly lower.
